ENRICH YOUR CHILD’S INTELLECT WITH QUALITY MUSIC LESSONS IN SELKIRK

It is a proven fact that children who have early exposure to music will rapidly develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. Playing a musical instrument can also build self- confidence. Do you have a child who is showing an interest in music? This is a wonderful, life-long skill to develop. The study of music enhances a person's life in so many ways. The skills acquired remain long after age or infirmity force one to give up sports and other activities. It also refines discipline and patience. Piano is a great first instrument, because it allows you to not only hear, but also see, the relationship of one note to another. At Hooper's School of Music, our instructor would love to meet you and tell you more about our music lessons in Selkirk. Contact us for more information.

ABOUT HOOPER'S SCHOOL OF MUSIC

For most people, music plays a role in everyday life. At Hooper’s School of Music, we help nourish that love of music at an early age. After moving our school from Lockport, we are now offering music lessons in Selkirk. Marilyn Hooper is a certified teacher of elementary piano and music theory and has also taught MYC and Music Pups. Our courses range from preparatory to level 6 for piano instruction, and music theory from preparatory to level 8. We offer private and group piano and theory classes. Students participate in two recitals per year, with optional prep for the Royal Conservatory exams and festival participation. To learn more, contact Hooper’s School of Music today.

BENEFITS OF MUSIC LESSONS

Regardless of age or ability, studying music offers many benefits. In fact, music education is more than just learning to play an instrument or reading sheet music. Studying music actually has far-reaching benefits that can impact students in all areas of their lives. Studies have shown that students who study music have improved academic skills, motor skills and social skills. Music education also teaches patience and discipline while boosting self-esteem. At Hooper's School of Music, we can help your child reach their full potential through professional music education.

MEET THE TEACHER

Marilyn Hooper is a former elementary and junior high school teacher. Her background includes many years of private piano instruction to children and adults. She was a teacher of Music for Young Children for twenty-five years, and of Music Pups (a program for infants and toddlers) for seven years. She also regularly takes advantage of the professional development opportunities offered by the Royal Conservatory and other schools of music.

Marilyn Hooper is a certified teacher of the Ultimate Music Theory program and has successfully completed the Elementary Pedagogy Course of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Sharing her love of music with students of all ages is the main focus of her professional life.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

At Hooper's School of Music, we believe that the study of music helps a child reach his/her full potential. It teaches self-discipline and order, giving a young person an advantage at school and in a future career. For this reason, many post-secondary institutions, when selecting candidates for their programs, give preference to applicants who have a music background.

We also believe that the study of music should be enjoyable, so the pieces that a student learns to play should reflect his/her interest. We do not believe in pushing a student into a repertoire that is too difficult if he/she is not ready for it. Students should learn at their own pace.

PRIVATE PIANO LESSONS IN SELKIRK

Hooper's School of Music in Selkirk offers private piano lessons for students of all ages, focusing mainly on preparatory to level 6. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

At Hooper's School of Music, I encourage participation in exams but do not insist on it. A student can take some exams and skip others, while still moving forward through the levels. I also encourage festival participation when available, but do not insist on it.

I strongly encourage participation in recitals and offer two per year. A pianist is often asked to play for some events, and I feel that recitals help students learn to share their gifts with others. My students are also encouraged to learn to accompany a vocalist or choir and have the opportunity to compose their own music.

PIANO LESSONS IN SELKIRK

Composing and making music involves more than the voice or fingers playing an instrument. A child or an adult learning about music has to tap into various skills and often simultaneously. This is why, at Hooper's School of Music, I have designed private piano lessons for students of all ages, focusing mainly on preparatory to level 6. Set up an appointment to enroll for private piano lessons in Selkirk.

Adults are usually more goal-oriented than children, so I work towards those goals. They don't often wish to perform in recitals or the festival. Hence I don't insist on it. Rather, I try to determine the type of music the person is interested in learning to play and choose a course that moves in that direction.

GROUP MUSIC THEORY LESSONS IN SELKIRK

Theory is the language of music. By studying it, we improve our playing because it helps us understand what we are doing, increases our appreciation, and helps us to learn pieces more quickly. At Hooper's School of Music, I offer theory instruction to students of all ages, from preparatory to level 8, using the Ultimate Music Theory course. If you would like to enroll in music theory lessons in Selkirk, give me a call to set up an appointment .

I try to schedule the theory lessons in such a way that students can learn in a group setting. Games and video presentations enhance the learning and show students just how much fun the Ultimate Music Theory Club can be. Concept review can be done in a way that is fun, through the purchase of an app which is correlated with each lesson. Students who choose to write the Royal Conservatory theory exams are usually very successful under my guidance.

FAQS

READ OUR FAQS

To offer a clear picture of what we offer, we have compiled a list of FAQs. If you have further queries, feel free to

contact us .

  • QUESTION: WE DON'T HAVE A PIANO. CAN MY CHILD TAKE LESSONS?

Answer: It is extremely difficult to make any progress without regular practice, so a student really needs an instrument at home. You can often find very good bargains online, where someone is moving and can't take their piano, but I strongly advise you to have the instrument checked by a technician before taking it home. Please contact us for further advice on this.

  • QUESTION: CAN MY CHILD PRACTICE ON A KEYBOARD?

Answer: Yes. A touch-sensitive keyboard is adequate for the first couple of years, but you should have plans to upgrade to either an electronic or acoustic piano by the time the student begins Conservatory Level One material.

  • QUESTION: HOW MUCH IS YOUR REGISTRATION FEE?

Answer: The standard registration fee is $20, but for first-time registrations of one child per family, there is an additional cost of $15, because it includes a parent guide, entitled "Music Lessons, a Book for the Parent." This little book, pictured in the photo on the meet the teacher page, is full of helpful hints and suggestions to help you guide your children through various situations that might come up in the daily practice routine.

  • QUESTION: HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO HAVE MY CHILD IN PIANO LESSONS?

Answer: I keep our tuition fees on par with what other Selkirk teachers are charging. This is currently $22.50* per 30 minutes of instruction. Fees are paid monthly, so this translates into a monthly payment of $90 for 30-minute lessons or $135 for 45-minute lessons. The amount you spend on materials will depend upon your child's level, and how quickly he/she progresses. A beginner needs books worth about $50 in September, and usually about $45 more throughout the year. If you do not own a piano or keyboard, you also need to consider the cost of purchasing an instrument, and yearly tuning (approximately $110) if it is an acoustic piano.

    *Prices subject to change.

  • QUESTION: WHAT IF MY CHILD LOSES INTEREST IN PRACTICING?

Answer: It is normal for children to experience downtimes, but it is difficult to really know if this is going to be a lasting interest until they have given it a good try. For that reason, it should be assumed that when a student is enrolled for music lessons, the intention is to make it a commitment for the year. The parent guide, mentioned above, gives many tips to help a student retain the initial interest in learning to play. However, if things are not working out, it is important that you speak to me privately about this before discussing the possibility of quitting with the child. Perhaps we can fix whatever is wrong.

  • QUESTION: WHICH SELKIRK SCHOOLS ARE NEAR YOUR STUDIO?

    Answer:

We are at walking distance of:

    • Robert Smith School – 16 min – 1.2 KM
    • École Bonaventure – 12 min – 0.9 KM
    • Selkirk Junior High – 12 min – 0.9 KM
    • Lord Selkirk Regional Secondary School – 19 min – 1.5 KM
