About Hooper's School of Music

For most people, music plays a role in everyday life. At Hooper’s School of Music, we help nourish that love of music at an early age. After moving our school from Lockport, we are now offering music lessons in Selkirk. Marilyn Hooper is a certified teacher of elementary piano and music theory and has also taught MYC and Music Pups. Our courses range from preparatory to level 6 for piano instruction, and music theory from preparatory to level 8. We offer private and group piano and theory classes. Students participate in two recitals per year, with optional prep for the Royal Conservatory exams and festival participation. To learn more, contact Hooper’s School of Music today.

Benefits of Music Lessons

Regardless of age or ability, studying music offers many benefits. In fact, music education is more than just learning to play an instrument or reading sheet music. Studying music actually has far-reaching benefits that can impact students in all areas of their lives. Studies have shown that students who study music have improved academic skills, motor skills and social skills. Music education also teaches patience and discipline while boosting self-esteem. At Hooper's School of Music, we can help your child reach their full potential through professional music education.

Meet the Teacher

piano

Marilyn Hooper is a former elementary and junior high school teacher. Her background includes many years of private piano instruction to children and adults. She was a teacher of Music for Young Children for twenty-five years, and of Music Pups (a program for infants and toddlers) for seven years. She also regularly takes advantage of the professional development opportunities offered by the Royal Conservatory and other schools of music.

Marilyn Hooper is a certified teacher of the Ultimate Music Theory program and has successfully completed the Elementary Pedagogy Course of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her long-range plans include enrollment in the Intermediate Pedagogy Course. This will give her the certification to teach students up to the end of Level 8. This means that students who are presently studying with her, or who register in the future, will be able to remain with her until they are ready for advanced study. Sharing her love of music with students of all ages is the main focus of her professional life.

Teaching Philosophy Statement

At Hooper's School of Music, we believe that the study of music helps a child reach his/her full potential. It teaches self-discipline and order, giving a young person an advantage at school and in a future career. For this reason, many post-secondary institutions, when selecting candidates for their programs, give preference to applicants who have a music background.

We also believe that the study of music should be enjoyable, so the pieces that a student learns to play should reflect his/her interest. We do not believe in pushing a student into a repertoire that is too difficult if he/she is not ready for it. Students should learn at their own pace.
